avatar Peter says:

みんさん、apologies for laughing so LOUD in the beginning, but Yoshi caught me way off guard, way off guard! That was definately one of the funniest things I’ve heard in a while. Takase was lucky she was far from the mic when Yoshi said, “Suuupaaaa desu!”

Sorry!

Yes the pictures are mine! I am happy you enjoy them.

Hi Japanesepod101 gang,

How are you? You guys know that I’m a devoted fan for Japanesepod101 but… I’d like to comment on something that has been bothering me for a while listening to your podcast. So sumimasen first.

For example, the latest culture class kept saying “girls” while referring boys as “guys”. Perhaps because I’m a woman who majored in sociology so I’m sensitive to termologies that are used to all groups of people (esp to women). I’d like to suggest using “gals” or “young ladies” or “young women” instead of “girls” because girls and boys means more like kids, not adults.

Sorry to bug on titles/ wordings here but one of the things I learned about society is that it does judge people by “labeling” or “calling names”. It’s just my 2 cents. Thanks for your attention.

avatar Nate says:

Great podcast and so funny. Yoshi-san, I am glad you are here to throw Peter-san off guard like that. It will be good for him. (Just kidding Peter-san. We Mac heads need to sitck together).

Takase-san you are great! Ganbate!

avatar Daniel says:

Takaseさん!

You’re the best! You and Yoshi had me in stitches this morning.

Can we start a Takase Fan Club? Can I be the first member?

Still, I’m waiting for the Nagasaki-ben lesson. How about teaching just a word or two each time.

Peterさん! Amazing, that’s two lessons in a row without saying “very very nice.”

Oh, by the way, I kept hearing you say 絶好調「ぜっこうちょう」。 Seeing as I’m around young kids all the time, I was surprized that you were using a “cool” expression that I don’t know.

But, what I heard you saying is 「ぜいこっちょう」。So, I looked it up in the dictionary, and as you might guess, I couldn’t find it. Then I asked my wife. After giving me a puzzled look, that enlightened look came to her face and she said, “Oh, 「ぜっこうちょう!」

Anyway, keep up the great work everyone! がんばれ!
Daniel

avatar Nathan says:

Lily-san,

Thanks for the input. I’m sure we didn’t even realize it, so thank you for pointing it out.

On a personal note, I think that the intention is what is important. I am sure that no one that said “girls” meant it in any demeaning way, consciously or unconsciously. Where I’m from, the only difference between girls and guys is the gender - whether it began that way or not. Even so, I recognize the importance to be sensitive to the thoughts, feelings, and ideas of those around you, as long as it isn’t taken so far that we all sound like PC personified

avatar Liz says:

Peter-san,
Don’t worry about laughing because everyone who listens to Yoshi say that is laughing too hard to even hear you!!! I thought it was so funny, too! I love the podcast so much. The jokes are cute, like the price tag still being on the suit.

avatar Daniel says:

I agree with Liz, the humor is wonderful.

Speaking of humor, how about the price of the Armani suit? If it’s really an Armani suit, and not an Almani suit, there is no way it was only 66000 yen! In fact, I bet the Almani is pushing that price.

Regarding the “girls” “guys” stuff, I think it is already PC to worry about it. It’s usually only academics and politicians who worry about it. (I don’t mean to be offensive here, just stating my take on it).

Daniel

avatar Nathan says:

Do suits really cost that much???

I don’t keep up with high fashion, but I don’t think I want to in that case

avatar Alicia says:

Ohayo Japanese Pod

Doumo Arigato for such a great site and the podcasts. I am listening to this in the UK and hope to one day visit Japan.

I have been trying to learn Japanese for a while now and have bought all the books and tried Pimsler when I discovered Japanese Pod. Now i recommend it to anyone who will listen.

Thanks to you all again .

avatar jay says:

number 101!
ichi-maru-ichi!

omedetouuuuuu!!!

ps. I understand what you mean lily, but there is in fact no semi-casual indefinite plural noun word for a collection of “young women”! “Girls” is as close as english gets I’m afraid! There is “gals” but it has an almost tongue-in-cheek quality to it for most countries.

They would have to resort to the more formal “men” and “women” (or young men and young ladies), which I think carries the wrong connotation for both genders.

It’s just the environment in which english evolved! Even now we can use “guys” to mean a group of men or a group containing both men and women, but it doesn’t sound quite right for a group of only women (unless very informal).

avatar Daniel says:

Nathanさん,

Yeah, high fashion costs that much. Although, “that much” wasn’t actually listed. I won’t list the price of the typical Armani, as you might pass out at the keyboard. Let’s just say, there aren’t enough zeros in the price they said on the show.

I will say this, of the overpriced designer suits, Armani is one that comes close to justifying the price of their suits. Now, the price of their T-shirts is just plain silly.

Aliciaさん、
I like Pimsleur. But it is spendy and requires that you listen 30 minutes a day. JP101, on the other hand, has a price that cannot be beat!

My elevator said Japan suffered an earthquake today.
Everyone alright?

avatar Nathan says:

Daniel-san,

I don’t ever plan on having the money to spend on something like that

Michael-san,

I think Japan suffers an earthquake every day

avatar Lily says:

Hi Nathan-san, Daniel-san, and Jay-san,

Thanks for your input. I know no one intentionally mean anything by it… that’s why I haven’t mentioned it for a long time until last week’s culture class. I’m neither a scholar nor a politician nor a trouble-maker… just thought I’d bring it to Japanesepod’s attention since a couple of my female friends also asked whether these are “girls” or “gals” that go to Shibuya 109. Thanks.

avatar Nathan says:

Lily-san,

I figured you knew that. I know you’re just a big trouble-maker

Just kidding, if it’s something that people are noticing then it’s good that you point it out so that we can be aware of it. So thanks again

avatar Sara says:

Hey there folks!
This podcast is awesome!! I found out about it through a friend who is also interested in Japanese. I’m a freshmen in highschool so I’m a youngster  I’m sooo glad this cast came out b/c my school dropped Japanese class from lack of intrest and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to take it next year
Anyhoo! You guys are life savers! Especially since I’m considering becoming an English teacher in Japan someday.
Might aswell shoot for the stars!
Thanks Japanesepod101

avatar Vicky says:

I love Peter-san’s laugh at loud!!!

We should celebrate today~~~
Cheers!

avatar Peter says:

Nathan-san, you’re the man! ハリネズミ??

Georgios-san, welcome to the community, and yes, the pics are great!

Vicky-san, great to hear from you! Thanks!

Jason-san, thanks for all the posts! I believe your 101st post is rapidly approaching. Please keep the great posts coming.

Lily-san, we can assure you that is was not intentional, and we’ll watch out for that in the future. Thanks for letting us know!

Nate-san, yeah, Yoshi got me a few times. Looking forward to getting him back. Round 2 next week.

Daniel-san, keep the support for Takase coming, as we are trying to get her to come on the show every week! She is an extremely talented person and made for this type of work.
Yeah, I should have addressed the very nice a few months ago, but maybe I just thought I did.
And, Yahoo Japan or Ebay, baby! Authentic Armani suits even cheaper!

Liz-san, thanks! The writing team was really happy when the read your post! And that was really funny. Yoshi!

Nathan-san, soon you’ll be able to buy a whole rack of them.

Alicia-san, thanks for the post! Absolutely made our day! Please keep the great posts coming.

Jay-san, you stole my original reply.

Micheal-san, David just pointed us to this cool page,
http://typhoon.yahoo.co.jp/weather/jp/earthquake/

Sara-san, thanks for the great post! If there is anything we can do just let us know. Please keep the great posts coming!

avatar Peter says:

Vicky-san, thanks!

avatar Jason says:

Sara-san, have you thought about maybe getting private lessons? Even if you can’t take it at your school, maybe you can work something out with whoever normally teaches it. As great as JPOD101 is, if possible it’s really best to have someone actually physically there to learn from, especially for speaking.

I went to talk to my ex-Japanese teacher about various stuff today. I’d forgotten how much difference there is between just listening and having to both listen and respond. But anyway, I showed her JPOD101, and she was very impressed. In fact, her intermediate class is working on the chapter in Yookoso about shopping, so she said her students could use this lesson.

avatar Sara says:

Jason-san, hey thanks for the tip.
I live in a smaller town and this poor teacher we have for Japanese is running around all the time to diff. schools. Besides, I think they would still offer Japanese class, but in at a diff. location. And I can’t drive! Don’t worry I’m on it. Drivers training(of course, no one wants me on the road too soon  ). So this independent study thing is going to have to work out for now. I’ll try to snag myself a tutior. Plus I’ve got a few new Japanese foreign exchange student friends to help me out now
Thanks a lot!

avatar Bryan says:

JP101’s 101

avatar Daniel says:

Peterさん、

Are you sure those Armani suits you bought from Yahoo Auctions are real? Where were they made?

I don’t know if you have seen Father of the Bride, but there’s a very funny bit in there about blue Armani suits.

And yes, I am campaigning for Takaseさん to be a regular. Maybe you could include a Nagasaki-ben minute on each podcast. So, will you have the Takase Fan Club on your own site, or will us listeners have to organize our own.

Daniel

avatar Orlina says:

Ohayo mina!

That’s cool, i’m learning so much, even thanks to all those replies (I didn’t even know the word ‘gals’ -_-’)

^^

And Peetaa san, I love your laugh^^ It’s so funny!

avatar Dawn says:

Now that you’ve reached north of 120 podcasts, you really should think about making some torrents available. For example, one for every 50 podcasts or so. It would be so much easier for someone starting out right now to download the torrent and have a pack of mp3 and pdf files at hand instead of downloading each and every one separately.
You guys rock! がんばれ!

avatar Tech Guy says:

you really should think about making some torrents available

Dawn,

Great suggestion! There are a few other featues/enhancements higher up on the list, but rest assured that Torrent support is definitely in the pipeline. Just be a little patient with us.

Thanks,

Tech Guy

avatar Nathan says:

Peter-san,

Yes!! They are tons of fun and so cute!

Sara-san,

Jason-san makes a good suggestion! But it sounds like you have the right idea, too  If you won’t be able to take Japanese, I recommend asking the teacher if they can recommend a tutor. Generally they will have a good idea or two for you

Bryan-san,

Indeed

Daniel-san,

I like the Nagasaki-ben Minute

Orlina-san,

There’s something to learn everywhere you go  がんばって!

Dawn-san,

Indeed, it’s just as Tech Guy says! I think our pipeline is about to be bursting at the seams

avatar Andrew says:

When sounds soften (s–>z, k–>g, t–>d etc) it should not be thought of as irregular! Saying sanzen is just more natural sounding and flows better than saying sansen; there’s nothing irregular about that. It’s kind of like when we say certain words in English that are spelled with a t but we pronounce them with a softer d instead, because, for example, saying whaTever with a strong t sound would sound funny. (Actually, maybe that’s just U.S. English, but hopefully I make my point clear.)

avatar Jenny says:

Yoshi-san, you have a very sexy voice! Please continue coming back so us women have someone to listen to!!

Sorry Peter! No offense, but I hear Americans all the time.

avatar Walter says:

Hey!

Although the lesson is quite old (I am catching up on the beginner lessons), there is an error in the lesson notes that still deserves correction. You give all the numbers from 1,000 to 100,000 but you incorrectly translate 100,000 as hyaku-man, where it should be juu-man, of yourse.

Apart from that, I am enjoying the lessons a lot! Thanks, guys and gals :)

avatar Peter says:

Well spotted and pointed out Walter for those of us who are even behind you.

It really should have been corrected by now.
