Today I held down the Control key and there was an option “Download Linked File”. That downloaded the file as an mp3.

On another note, I have a question about last Friday’s Intermediate lesson. When Natsuko was talking to Peter on the phone, she told him to wait by saying, “Mou chotto matte te.” What does that extra “te” mean? I’ve seen it used that way before, but I’m not quite sure what it means. Thanks for any help!

Congratulations for you efforts to made this up till now. 100 episodes is a mark that you have to be proud of. By the way, here in Brazil is not raining (till now )

Nicole-san; the last “te” in mattete is a contraction of “matte ite”, which again is a contraction of “matte ite kudasai” or “please wait”. It is very common in japanese to end in an “open -te form” when you make a request.

Hope this clears up your question.

I have the feeling that no one over at JP101 sleeps. I think once you become “initiated” you get some kind of magic potion that makes sleep unnecessary.

please let me help you. You should install the Asian Text Support for Windows XP. You just need the original Windows XP Install Disk. Let me guide you:
1) Click the Start-button, choose “Control Panel”;
2) Click “Date, Time, Language and Regional Options”;
3) Click “Add other Languages”;
4) The “Regional and Languages Options” dialog pops up;
5) Click the tab “Languages”;
6) Click button “Details…”;
You will now add the Japanese Keyboard:
7) Click the “Add…” button. Two lists will appear;
8) Choose “Japanese” at “Input Language” list, choose your own language by “Keyboard layout/IME”;
9) Click Ok button;
You will now see two keyboard layouts in the list “Installed services”. One of them is Japanese.

Hold on, it’s not finished yet. You will now add the English-to-Japanese gizmo thingy:

10) Click button “Language Bar…” and check all options, click Ok.
11) Click again on the Ok button;
12) Most important: check the option “Install files for East Asian Languages.

Windows will ask for the original install disk. Put it in your drive, relax, sit back and enjoy the magic…

13) Reboot your system.

You will have a blue button in your taskbar, you can switch from your original keyboard to japanese keyboard. Activate the language bar (click the blue button, check the option “show the language bar”). The Language bar will appear on your screen on the upper side, switch to Japanese, choose “Hiragana” by Input mode. The secret is: type a sentence (in Word, Notepad, Outlook…) as you hear it, Windows will translate your keystrokes in japanese characters.

Andreas-san, are you clicking on the select button first before trying to highlight the text? It works fine on my PC.

thanks for the replies. Yes, I’m using the “select” tool. Actually copying English or Romaji works fine for me. I installed “MS Mincho” and even can select the font in excel.

If I copy Japanese from the PDF file it ends up just being empty text (spaces). For example, the first three Kanji from the PDF looks for me just ike this (without the quotations): ” ”

That’s very strange.

(BTW, I can read and copy all the Japanese in peoples comments in this section.)

Yes, Adobe Reader to Excel (2003). But it looks the same trying to copy to MSWord, Notepad or anything else.

In Regional Settings on the Advanced Tab, is it set to Japanese for “Language for non-Unicode programs”? I’m not sure if it has to be, but this might have something to do with it. Other things to try before you change that… set your IME to Japanese when copying and pasting, and set the font in Excel to Mincho before you paste. Let me know if this helps.

Here is something strange,
copying does not work for me with the pdf file of the current lesson #52, but it works with the one of the next lesson #53.

I don’t know what this is but yesterday in Australia where I live it rained a bit. What is going on? For some reason everybody had rain yesterday.

Great work everyone. I know it’s a bit late but I’m catching up on the episodes SLOWLY Trying to listen to 2 a day! Can’t believe you have reached 100 episodes, but I reckon by the time I catch up you might be up to your 500th! lol

btw - wish this was around when I was in high school or when I was on exchange in Japan, but alas it is helping me prepare for my trip back to Japan next year!
