I sense a sinister and darker meaning in 弱肉強食. Hearing “niku” on the track and seeing “survival of the fittest” on the lesson notes didn’t reconcile, so it was worth a closer look. “Survival of the fittest” rather cleans up what appears to be rather crude when taken literally. As aforementioned, “niku” caught me eye, well ear, so I took a closer look. I recognize the kanji root for yowai for weak, frail, delicate to the left and the root for tsuyoi, or strong, to the right. These reconcile fine as one might expect a comparison between strong and weak to fit into “survival of the fittest.” And then we find the root kanji for taberu or eat. So the way this looks is that the literal translation is that the weak are meat to be eaten by the strong. Is this analysis correct?

This was a very enjoyable lesson. どうも　ありがとう　御座います。

I find this the most difficult episode to follow too. It is too long for a beginner like me to catch up with everything. I have been listening to it more than 10 times to get used to the speed of the conversation. Anyway, this is really a fun dialogue. Great job, Jpod101.

Was it just me, or did anyone else find this episode much more difficult to follow? I think the large number of new words in this show confused me. I am thankful that the next episode #52 is easy to follow. The PDFs are a life-saver. Thanks for all that you provide for us, JapansePod101.com.
