At 4.09 in the pod cast Sukara-san says みどり. My dictionary lists みどり as greenery but the kanji 緑 means green. Would you shed some light on this for me?

rob-san, yes I too am haunted by memories of being told to “eat your GREENS”. AHHHH!!!H! yuk For the record I eat no greens my poor heart! haha

Kanji closer-up video review!:
I like the idea a lot. the intro was a little long for me. and I reckon you can fit at least 5 or 6 kanji in there (speed up stroke animation maybe?)
I think this could be really useful.

Hmmm, yes, the video is very cool. I do agree, though, that there could be some fine-tuning. The kanji material was 20 seconds out of a total runtime of 1:07. That means less than 1/3 of the video was about kanji The stroke order was slow, but it didn’t really bother me. I think you could cut the intro down and do at least two kanji. Also, it may not be practical, but I would rather see a real person writing the kanji over an animated font any day - much more practical, I think. I do realize you may not have any calligraphers in the house, though

Overall, I think it’s a great idea, but to be blunt (and a little overly harsh), right now it doesn’t offer much more than the kanji corner graphic (7kb vs. 4.4mb) aside from showing off the song and a fancy opening animation. (I do realize that stroke order is very important, I’m just overexaggerating to make the point.) I can’t wait to see how it evolves, though! Thanks for the great work, as always!

by the way, I hope you can provide the full mp3 file, it’s a good ringtone for my cellular phone!!!

Cool video. Others are right, though, it could use some streamlining. Very good idea, though, and quite well executed.

By the way, is there some way to download ALL of the class notes all at once? Similar to the way I can download all of the audio lessons via iTunes?

Another tangential question: There are three iTunes podcasting links on the home page, but I see only two entries in the iTunes music store. I subscribed to everything; I don’t want to miss anything. But I’m sure I’m either undersubscribed (2/3) or oversubscribed (getting the audio twice.)

Great Stuff As Usual… But…. Peter, you got me in trouble….

My wife (Japanese) came into the room the other day and asked me to help her get some choirs done around the house…. I replied… “so desu ne…Chotto yoji ga arimasu… just like you and Natsuko san said…

Well, she put her hands on her hips and said in English…. “yeah, like what do you have to do”… ( I guess it didn’t help that I was sitting on the couch with the t.v. remote control in my hand when I said it…) But, you said it was like a get-out-of-jail free card.. It got me out of jail and into the dog-house!

Now, onto my question. Is there a consoldated list of all the vocabulary used in the beginner / intermediate lessons to date? I’m trying my best to go through the older podcasts as I don’t want to miss anything and it occured to me that maybe you guys already have such a list….if so could you post it someplace??? It would be very helpful.

Looking foward to finding out just what the heck happened in Okinawa!

Hi Jonas… Right… My family is the same way… They worry about the earthquakes..and last years Nigata tragedy didn’t help matters.

BTW, did you feel the small earthquake today? I think it was located near Tsukba Ken.. I’m from the Narita area in Chiba and it was very small….maybe a 2. All the Japanese in my office barely even noticed…but whenever there is a earthquake I jump up and down and let everyone know.. I think they just consider me a novice!

As has been stated several times already the video was way cool. I loved the fact that the stroke order was shown. I also liked seeing the relationship of the kanji to the actual form of the mountain. I have often wodnered how the kan ji orginated. I find myself looking at each kanji, or kana form and wondering how they derived it. Very interesting stuff to me.

Sakura-san - thansk for the explanation on midori (みどり). It makes more sense when explained from this point of view.

great video - I was either too lazy or too busy to learn what the kanji close-up is offering, but as I downloaded the video I somehow felt obliged to spend some time reading the pronunciations in hiragana, which was not so fast as I still don’t know it well… to sum up, a real push towards learning for me!
