Is it possible to Write a Review without a Credit Card ?

Nate says:

A question pops into my head. I know different countries have different flavors. Australia uses beet root on their hamburgers. Do the Japan versions of Wendy’s or MacDonalds have different additions to their hamburgers? Maybe lotus root or water chestnut?

As for other fast food chains (hamburgers) do they have What-A-Burger or Sonic Burger over there? Both of these are big here in Texas.

Arigatou gozaimasu.

Steve-san, wanted to leave you a message on your blog, but didn’t have time to register. Will register soon! As for the fast food, it had to be covered sooner or later. When you make it to Japan you have to try Mos Burger, and some people really like Freshness Burger. But the main reason for introducing this topic is fast food has become a huge part of Japanese people’s lives! Mac is like an after school hangout for high school girls. They have 3 story Macs, you order on the first floor, smoking section on the second floor and non-smoking on the third! Sometimes there are actually 2 Macs within stone throwing distance of each other! And I once ordered at Mos Burger, while holding a Big Mac!

Nate-san, let’s do our best to convert Sakura! Keep the pressure on!

Also, for got to mention, my favorite blue seal ice cream flavor is
http://www.blueseal.co.jp/

紅芋・べにいも・beniimo - sweet potato

Also, many Japanese tend not like A&W Root Beer, Dr. Pepper or black licorice (liquorice for Steve  ), as the common consensus is that the taste is similiar to the smell of medicine!

Gevorg-san, it’s the thought that counts! Thanks! I also owe you a response about your inquiry to studying here. Got some good tips for you, and I’ll be in touch soon! You’re choice of Iwate is a great one! How did you come up with such a great selection?

Nate-san, Teriaki burger is not bad. I believe even good enough to be re-imported back to the US. I’ve seen staff at the nearby Mac decked out in berets and upscale clothing once. I will look into to this further tomorrow!

avatar
Gevorg says:

What does the “MOS” in ‘MOS Burger’ stand for ^^ ?

avatar
steve says:

Nate-san.
I would imagine that the same flavours are used in MacDonalds and Wendy’s etc as are used else were in the world. I am not the biggest fan of places like MacDonalds, I would rather pop into the Italian Coffee shop, there the food is fresh and hot. Which brings me to my other question….they must have such places like that in Japan? So I am assumimg the same principle applies when ording from small Italian style coffee shops?

My other question is this. Are places like MacDonalds, etc, more popular with younger people? I know you said Fast food is popular in Japan….but My thinking is it is only really popular with those in their teens and maybe early to mid twenties (of course I also imagine young families go there as well)

Anyway..surely the best fast food in Japan is Yakitori…That is just Oishii and knocks spots of any MacDonalds hamburger.
Do I sound old?….Hehehehe

steve says:

Mmmmm! Peter-san.
You have convienced me…I will try Mos Burger when I visit Japan.
Blimey!…they actually have a none smoking area…….But it’s Japan….
I always imagine places that you eat in, in Japan to be very smokey…Maybe I have seen to many films and it as blurred my reality

I wanted to make a French Review of your lesson, since I failed to be the first person who made one in オランダ語 . But since I can’t post a Review in iTunes, I’ll post it on this website, so someone else can use it instead ^^. I’ll do it right after I ask my French Teacher to Spell-Check it.

Thank You for remembering my question about studying in Japan ^^ ! I’m very thankful. To be honest, I taught of studying at Iwate Daigaku because the name sounded so cool ! I was like: “WHOOAAAAAAAAAAAAA !”. But after a lot of research on their website, it appeared to be a nice University ^^. Since I plan to be an interpreter Japanese-Dutch-German-French-English in the future, it would be extremely useful for my Japanese skills if I could study in Japan. But if You know better Universities, please let me know ^^. I loved today’s show again !!! It was really cool !! I hope you continue making these great shows !!! Yay !!
Well, I’m off studying now ^^. I still have a lot of work for school.

O hayo gozaimasu!

I’ve catching up jppod for the weekend and this morning’s lessons. Only think I can think about is….HUNGRY!!! although I was eating breakfast same time, I couldn’t stop picturing those foods.

Peter-san, thank you for the tennis phrases. Yes! I got a chance to use the words you gave me, but I was too busy to play tennis that I forgot some of them. Also I met more Japanese people so I was able to use really basic steps again  . Domo arigatogosaimasu Peter-san!!! Funny thing was, when I tried to speak Japanese, Spanish people were around me. And, they thought that I was trying to speak Spanish, so they tried to correct me. I told them NO I was speaking Japanese….Tennis terms sound similar to Spanish so we all got confused. We all laugh out. It was great weekend!!!

Nathan-san, so sorry. I had to skip my class last Friday. But I will catch up for this Friday. I will. Promise!!!

Nate-san, I didn’t know you are at TX also. What part of TX?
Nathan-san is at Austin, TX. Right?

I should get some Japanese food for lunch. I can’t listen anymore without eating those food….

Good pod, but I was a bit disappointed also that it’s only Katakana, English-like words, and no Japanese original words. Come on, is that so hard to remember “makudonarudo” or “kentakky”?

Fabi-san, mcnuggets are my favourite! well in fact it’s all I eat from mcdonalds :) Don’t get me started on my diet, let’s just say I average about 16 mcnuggets a day :(

This topic is very interesting for me, as although most people like to try being cultural when it comes to food, my palate is VERY limited. I can only eat very very very very plain foods. When I go to japan I have to say most of my meals will probably be from mcdonalds :)

OR if i have access to a stove, how expensive is meat over there? Can you just buy like steaks? or chicken breast?
yes very boring I know, but it’s all I can do :(

avatar
Jonas says:

Gevorg-san: “Doushite” is one way of saying “why”, right. “Soshite” would be a conjunction meaning “and”. Words meaning “because” would be for example “kara” and “node”, which you put at the end of a sentence. A more advanced one would be “–(1)– to iu riyu de –(2)–” which would mean “for the reason of –(1)–, –(2)–”

The correct spelling should be “mochikaeri”, with a CHI.

Scott says:

One time years ago, I asked my Japanese roommate where he wanted to eat dinner. He told me, “Let’s go to マクドナルド.” Now, I’ve been pretty good at understanding his accent so far, but this was the first I didn’t have a clue what he was saying. So I tried my best not to look like an idiot in front of him.

“Where?”

“マクドナルド.”

“Oh… where is that?”

“You know, マクドナルド, by the Wal-Mart.”

“Ohh, okay!” I still didn’t have a clue what he was saying, but I drove with him anyway towards the Wal-Mart hoping I could figure it out when I was there. After circling around the parking lot for a while, the gig was up.

“Umm… where are you going?” he asks me.

I couldn’t hide it any more. With my face very red, I asked him again, “Where do you want to go?”

“マクドナルド!” he says, and points to the golden arches in front of us.

“Oh! McDonalds!” That was the most embarrassing moment I’ve had with my Japanese roommate. I guess when they’re so used to saying it the katakana way, it’s pretty hard to say it in proper English. But today’s lesson just reminded me of this embarrassing moment.

avatar
Kristina Rimpley says:

Okay, I just found an AMAZING website!!

http://www.rikai.com/perl/Home.pl

You can paste ANY Japanese text here (Katakana, Hiragana, and Kanji) and it doesn’t JUST translate. It breaks up the words, gives you the sounds, and what it means. That way you can understand the parts! Just GREAT!!!!! Seriously, everyone who is just learning Japanese should check this out!!!

avatar
Jonas says:

Scott-san: Great story!

I guess when they’re so used to saying it the katakana way, it’s pretty hard to say it in proper English. But today’s lesson just reminded me of this embarrassing moment.

I guess this goes the other way too! Native english speakers have trouble pronouncing katakana words the “japanese way” it seems

Rimpley-san: It has been mentioned before, but I’m sure there are more people like you that haven’t seen it, because it was quite a while ago, so thank you for posting again. Another similar site is http://www.popjisyo.com/ which offers the same kind of service. Have you also checked out http://del.icio.us/JapanesePod101/ , it’s a collection of links related to japanese studies, that Nathan has been so kind as to make for everyone to enjoy! There is also a firefox plugin similar to rikai.com, called rikaichan. It is really nice too.

Hey dudes, jsut wanted to let you guys know something!
Yesterday I started reading “Remembering Kanji I”, by james heisig. It is a neat way to remember kanji and their meanings (no readings though, just meanings)
I am up to 104 kanji remembered at 100% accuracy since yesterday. I made myself a little flash program that randomly gives me a word (and the relevant frame number in the book) and I try to remember and draw the kanji for that word. (rather than look at the kanji and devise its meaning, which is easier). I just add words to it as I learn them

Like I said, 100% so far. will let you guys know how it goes if you are interested. But so far I am very impressed. I guess I’ll go for 50 or 100 more tomorrow. It’s really that easy :) retention and recall speed is phenomenal.

I also heard there is a “reading kanji” version of his too, not to mention more kanji meanings (this book has just over 2000 ).
