Karlさん,
"Kedo" means but, and is often used to connect two sentences, for example: I went to the store, BUT it was closed.

Dan-san,
I think that's perfect answer!! "Keredomo" sounds more polite than "kedo." We use "kedo," in a casual conversation. Arigatou gozaimasu:dogeza:

Hi Ian.

Just thought I would try to answer your question regarding kedo or keredomo.
When it is used in mid-sentence, I does mean but. For example.
Kyou no tenki wa yoi desu keredomo, ashita no tenki wa yokunai to kiiteimasu.
今日の天気はよいですけれども、明日の天気はよくないと聞いています。Today's weather is nice, but I heard tomorrow's weather will not be so great.
Japanese feel the need to soften their speech. (that is not so polite to speak directly) So when I say "Moshi moshi, Dan desu kedo" I am just softening my speech so that I do not sound so direct. I hope this helps.

In my Japanese class we were taught to use 電話に出る:What's the difference between 電話に出るand 電話をする?
(hehe hopefully someone still reads the comments on podcasts that are more than 2 years old >.>)
