Another great podcast..and as usual another good laugh. That is the beauty of these podcasts, you guys make them so entertaining. Mmmmmm! I cannot think of a Japanese film with a Happy Ending….Oh! no wait…now I have said that, I can think of Japanese films with happy endings. But most of the Jpanese films I have in my collection do not have the typical ‘happy Ending’ we normally associate with Hollywood.
I really like they way you break down the Kanji. It is so helpful.

Japansesepod101 crew, I have a suggestion, since we are getting into 漢字, why don’t we get into studying the kanji in our iPods, I may be mistaking but I believe most iPod generations have an option to change the menu language to Japanese. I have mine like that and it has tons of useful stuff, like country names, days of the week, months and stuff like ミュージック、写真（しゃしん）、ビデオ、曲(きょく）、時計（とけい）、etc, etc. But there is some 漢字 that I do not understand, I can’t read .

I have this idea that to understand a foreign language you need to immerse your self in it, this is hard when you have no one to practice the language with. I’ve done stuff like watch movies in Japanese with subtitles in Japanese, I’ve installed Firefox in Japanese, my iPod is setup in Japanese, post-its on my computer screen to remind me of some 漢字、etc. So I try go get as much Japanese around me as I can. . That is how I mastered English, being my second language.

Just a suggestion, がんばって下さい。

In fact, your post reminded me to look up some kanji. When playing, the iPod usually has 再生中 at the top. I know each character, but wasn’t aware of the meaning together. Well I just checked, and 再生 is “playback”, so I suppose you could translate it as “Currently Playing”. Thanks for the reminder!

Hey Jay on a unrelated matter did you know Titanic, Master and Commander and part of Pearl Harbor was filmmed in Mexico, 30 minutes from where I live Tijuana, right at the Baja California sore, they even have tours so you can see all the props, the Master and commander ship is still there and part of stages in the movies. Pretty cool . Anyway this has nothing to do with Japanase.

I have an idea that addresses a few things said here.

I agree that a message board would be a cool idea, but as a moderator of two fairly populated message boards, I know as well as anyone that they can get out of hand really quickly.

I also agree that immersion is very important to understand the language, but there’s no Japanese class at my school, and no one who is even learning it that I know of, so that’s pretty hard. It’s possible to get immersed by watching an anime with no subtitles, but most of that will go over your head.

So here’s what I propose…a japanese only message board. We have to post EVERYTHING in Japanese (this would quickly filter out all the trolls who just want to cause trouble in message boards, since they probably don’t want to go through that much effort.) This would also be great for immersion, since, like in Japan, we have to be able to express ourselves in Japanese in order to get our point across. And since we’re all listening to this podcast, we’re probably of comparable ability (obviously there are quite a few people who know more than the material in the podcasts, but we have a pretty high lowest common denominator to work with.)

I think this would be an exciting way to learn how to formulate the phrases that you will be wanting to say when in Japan anyway, and an opportunity to “think in japanese,” which I read somewhere is a crucial element of being fluent.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

There could be different rooms; a romaji room, hiragana/katakana room, kanji room etc.

Your idea is interesting, and in theory it is a good idea. The only problem is that there is a huge audience, and making it Japanese-only would surely filter out many who would find that far too daunting. I’m sure we have a number of people who would be comfortable with that, but I bet that there are more that would shy away simply because they weren’t confident of how to express themselves. There should definitely be a Japanese-only secion of the boards, but I don’t think the whole board being that way is the best choice.

Today’s lesson is really fun. I also love Lord of the Rings, especially the 3rd episode, Return of the King.

I haven’t seen many Japanese films yet… though I also saw “Shall We Dance” and yes, no re-make can top the original. Actually, my favorites are “older” Japanese soap operas such as Long Vacation and 101 Proposals. Recently the Korean soap operas are taking over in Asia but I still like Japanese soap the best!

I have to add that … Wow! So many posts on this fun and entertaining lesson!

For the Japanese-only forum, I realize that it wouldn’t be very accessable, but that was really the point I had in mind. It’s amazing how fast forums get screwed up because people come in and start trolling and just being jerks, so I’m hoping that making the board japanese-only will kill two birds with one stone by preventing the need for heavy moderating, as well as offering a means for immersion.

Yes, I am also pretty much 100 per-cent sure that 々is way of showing that the word is repeated…but don’t take my word for that, I am no Kanji expert.

As for Japanese film, when it comes to classics you just have to mention the films of Yasujiro Ozu and Akira Kurosawa. But It seems that were as we in the West know of Takeshi Kitano for his films, (Oh and of course Takeshi’s Castle) he seems to be more well know in Japan for being a Comedian.
But it seems to me that Takashi Miike is the most popular film director in the West with such films as Audition, The Happiness of the Katakuris and of course Ichi the Killer.

アルフォンソさん： Right! There are other examples too but these are the most used, that I can think of; 色々（いろいろ）、常々（つねづね）、段々（だんだん）、後々（のちのち）and 益々（ますます）、and 満々（まんまん）。
The last one is only(?) used in the expression 自信満々（じしんまんまん, full of confidence）though.

Brenda-san, special guests, yes, well….probably falls more into the category of marketing , but people who appear on the show, but are not regulars. Kaze and now Hatusmi, will make cameos, etc., but for the moment not appear as regulars. So a special guest, is pretty much someone limited to conversations.

hey dudes, the kanji pdf link is incorrect!

Can I just mention 14 months later I’m finally “AT” this lesson (I only found JPod earlier this year), and I’m just amazed: I’d been feeling like things were starting to putter along a bit, and suddenly 34, 35, 36 feel like I’ve been KICKED into high gear, like we’re really starting to TALK now.

As I listened I just got totally excited about the new words, the verbs, the casual and polite… it just feels like a total rebirth of the series. And yes, it’s a year back, I know, but it got me all worked up.

I can’t wait to keep going on this series.
