見ません？ is just a “softer” way of saying 見ましょう. It’s like “Why don’t we…?” instead of “Let’s go and…!” in English.

–Shi is used to give two or more reasons or cause and it implies that other reasons or causes exist besides those mentioned.
–Kute is “and” or “or” but it’s only used to combine i-adjectives.

● kute is covered in Newbie series season 3 Lesson 15, 16. Beginner series season 4 29
● shi is covered in beginner season 4 Lesson 37, 38

If you want detailed grammar explanation, Newbie series season2, 3 Beginner series season 4, 5, 6 are highly recommended .

kute and shi

I have been studying shi-shi on minna no nihongo and wasn’t sure when to use kute and when to use shi.

I noticed in the informal dialogue you use shi instead of kute. Is that a general rule? Informal is with shi while formal kute?

Now I am curious, I am also going to order “Tengoku no Honya”. Japanesepod guys, the informal dialogue is simply brilliant. I was also looking at your video section, you know something that is really missing in the japanese teaching arena? Movies or videos subtitled in hiragana/katakana (kana). This would help a lot, especially when you are a beginner/intermediate and still have to memorize 1000+ kanji but already know enough grammar to understand intermediate/advanced text in kana. This is how I learned English, watching a lot of TV with subtitles

Everytime I listed to this I think it sounds funny how Natsuko responds to Peter when he talks about Arnold Schwarzenegger. I can imagine her face as she looks at him, like she is saying “What are you talking about?”

I had a few questions about the Informal dialogue that I didn’t see explained anywhere!

These three lines, in particular:
なつこ: 私はロマンチックな映画がいいかな 1) What is the “kana” used for at the end?
かぜ: マジっすか？ロマンチックな映画はくだらないんだよなー 2) What is the “majissuka?” he asks? And also, what is the “n dayou na-” at the end?
なつこ: くだらなくないもん！ 3) Finally, what does the -mon ending signify?

Would anyone be so kind as to explain these points briefly, or direct me to some lessons that do explain them?

The rest of the Informal I was able to understand, but it’d be GREAT to put in some notes to explain the things that don’t show up in the normal dialogue!
