Hi Jennie,
I wouldn't say that it would offend people. You may be asked why, but it won't be seen as a big deal. Also, vegetarians are not common, but they do exist, and you can find some vegetarian restaurants if you research them :) I hope this helps!

Hi. This is a culture question. I've never been to Japan. If I went out to restaurants in Japan, and did not want to drink alcohol, would that offend Japanese people? Also, are there such things as vegetarians in Japan? Thanks a lot for all the help.

Hi Rodrigo-san,
Because these lessons are meant for beginners, there are some kanji (usually the more difficult ones) that we choose not to include in the transcripts :)

I don't understand, if the lesson notes show that there are Kanjis for many of the words, why aren't they presented in the lesson transcript?

> The Kanji 日means sun and the Kanji 本 means land (or book)

本 actually means "root", or "origin" in this case. so "nihon" refers to the place of the sun's origin, or the place from which it rises.

In response to Kiki-chan's question.
If your unsure of your relation to the one asking "Sukoshi Hanashimasu. Demo made jouzu dewa arimasen." may be safer,I.E more polite. Hope I got that right, Let me know if I am off.

Konnichiwa.
I am fairly new to this site and just signed up for 2 years after 3 days of trial. Love the convenience of i-tune download, which allows learning anywhere and anytime. I have previously taken Japanese lessons at SoKo Gaikun in San Francisco. Only managed to finish 2 seasons due to time commitment. With JPod101, I think I can stick to the learning.

My family vacation in Japan every year for at least 2 weeks in past 10 years. We are leaving again for Kyoto in 10 days. Can't wait. I am polishing up my basic dialog skill and will take all downloads with me, which I am sure will come in handy.

Thanks for the wonderful site and great learning tool. Love Sakura-san's and Natusko-san's voice.

kiki-chan-san
>>I have a questions:
When someone asks 日本語が　話しますか　is it okay to respond まあまあです　or will you just respond with 灰？

Well, it really depends on your current Japanese level and situation. But if you're super confident with your Japanese skill, はい might be OK.
If you don't have that much confident　yet, say すこしだけ"Sukoshi dake"(only a little).

One thing you should know is generally speaking Japanese people are very humble. That means if you answered はい, they expect you to speak fluent Japanese.

I love the humor they have when conversing. It gives the lesson a friendly feel and makes it easier for me to learn.:grin:

Also, I think I've found sort of the origin of "Land of the Rising Sun"

The Kanji 日means sun and the Kanji 本 means land (or book). So putting the Kanji together, you get "Land of the Sun" or Land of the Rising Sun" (rising maybe because you put 日 in front, or "above," 本!!).

Leto-san
As you pointed out this series was created loooong time ago.
Try listening Newbie lesson season 2, 3 or 4.
(Actually season 4 is much easier than season 2 and 3:wink:)
If newbie series is too easy for you try listening beginner series season 4 and 5. Those lessons are more organized and informative.

Please try to listen some of those lessons and give us feedback.

I have to say, the starting lessons' style was better, they were more natural. The way Peter acts in these lessons it's starting to be annoying. I went through all the newbie lessons, by the end of them (at least by the end of Peter's lessons) he was starting to get better, but these lessons are almost worse than the first ones in newbie. I know it's been 4 years, but hey ... I can really just hope that his style improved throughout this series, otherwise I don't think I'll be able to crunch myself through to the end. Which would be quite a shame, as the lessons content itself is great, it's just the way it is served...:???:
