Man, thanks you guys! Your lessons are awesome. They’re easy enough for even me to understand. I’ve been using these phrases as often as possible. This really helps.

I love the audio lessons that I have downloaded off of ITunes. I have listened to the first couple of lessons several times. This is exactly what I have been looking for to take with me while I am in the car. I also signed up for the seven day free trial, but I am not as impressed with the interactivity of the website. I do not like PDF files, they are awkward and I think that there could be more of the flashcards and quizes. I am going to be trying out several different lessons, and I may change my opinion though.

Joshuaさん,
Welcome to JPOD.
These PODcasts are probably the best (or second best, consider Pimsleur as well) material that you can listen to in your car.
Of course there are limitations to what can be done with audio, eventually you need to see the material too. By reviewing the PDF that goes along with each lesson, I think you can get a lot more out of the material. Well, at least I know I do.
Regarding your comments about the quizzes and flashcards, I will let the JPOD staff respond.
Please feel free to post if you have any questions about Japanese. That is one of the great things about JPOD, the community. You can proabably get some people to help suggest other study materials.

Hey,
I love JPod. It’s so much easier to listen to than the usual dry educational texts I’ve found in the library. Great job!
I did have a question though. In this episode, Peter says something like “we have introduced over 12 speakers to date.” This leads me to believe that Eat, Drink & Be Merry isn’t the first episode.
Can anyone clarify this for me, please?
Thanks, and keep up the amazing work.
Thursday at 4:55 pm
uhhh, its a bit confusing on how i download the earlier episodes for this podcast, when theyre not on itunes? this podcast taught em a lot with only one episode, but is it possible to download the earlier posts?
Saturday at 10:12 am
I love you guys. I’m working my way through the newbie/beginner freebie stuff to supplement my Rosetta Stone. I’m hopefully going to be teaching in Japan early 2008. When I’m about 6 months out, I’m going to purchase a package and gun it until my brain explodes.
Keep it up.

I’m not quite sure what David is talking about. The introductions are wonderful and give me quite a laugh before I get right into the lesson itself.
I would like to say that I am very thankful for these excellent lessons. They are great for improving ones’ Japanese speech; they’re helping me beyond a doubt. I am majoring in Japanese next year when I go to University, so it is excellent to use the beginner lessons as a refresher and the intermediate increase my knowledge of the language. Hopefully, I will be back in Japan in a few years (I went two summers ago and loved it). Please continue with lessons. Though it will take me ages to catch up, I am glad that everyone involved with Japanesepod101 has taken such time out of their day to create something to help those learning the language.

I hear the word revolutionary so undeservingly used nowadays, but Japanese101 is TRULY revolutionary!
Its so nice of you to make usable parts this service free to people who cant pay for it. You should promote a Webby Awards link on your site so your users can show you their appreciation.

Thank you, koneecheewa, i’ll keep listening to these and learning japanese.

Hello, I´m from germany and this ist nearly what I have looked for! Naturally I want to listen japanesepod101 in german, sadly there is no good Japanese learning material for germans.
But in spite of this I like the japanesepod101 courses
because of many reasons. But I am a little confused
in which order I should follow the different courses, blogs, videos and so on, any sugestions?
Monday at 10:49 am
犬図化さん、
Try starting with the Newbie + Beginner Lessons. I find that the most recent newbie lessons are actually more difficult than the older beginner lessons. When you want a break from learning, listen to the News. Finally, you can learn some survival phrases in just about any order, as they don’t necessarily build on each other.
If you want to watch the videos, just work them in, in the chronological order that they appear. For example, Video #1 was published on the same day as Beginner lesson #7, so just watch it following Beginner lesson #7.
Good Luck + 頑張って下さい!
Wednesday at 12:12 pm
Ah, this is excellent. These lessons are much better than the lessons that I’ve been doing myself on the net. I am glad to see how each lesson has notes for reference. I also liked how a little humor is speckled into the lesson, it makes it more enjoyable. Thanks for providing such a great way to learn Japanese to the public!
Monday at 1:14 pm
this is great!
These are wonderful lessons, thank you so much. I’ve just finished the ‘Basic Japanese’ set from Pimsleur and found that JapanesePod101 is so full of energy and interesting, compared to the straight ahead Pimsleur. Thanks for such an invigorating and refreshing way to learn Japanese!
Friday at 10:22 am
OMG, great lesson!
I already kwew a couple of words like itadakimasu (and it’s probably written bad XD haha anyway..i knew the meaning). I heard them watching 1 Litre of tears on youtube *_*… anyway, this is helping a lot, thanks! I mean.. arigatou gozaimasu

こんばんはみなーさん!
I love the podcasts. I have tried and tried to find the same thing else where for less or no money at all (im cheap lol)…lets just say it didnt go over very well lol
I was here before, and the fee turned me away that time. I’ve come back, with a lil more knowledge of japanese (not by much lol) and i feel i can follow along better. I signed up for the 7 day free trial, the PDF’s arent anything special, but they do help, visual aid is always good =D
Now, I signed up for one month basic, ima try that, and maybe next month try premium (lack of funds this month lol). Maybe in my trial i just didnt get a chance to really see alot of stuff, but I was hoping to see more visuals. I dont know what i’m expecting, looking for..im a beginner, but everywhere i go to learn this, somethings missing. I guess its my lack of willing to spend money? lol
good find, takes some getting used to, stick around long enough for forums to become a tool as well…they’ve helped me alot just in my first night on them!!
ありがとうございます!!
Monday at 2:43 pm
thanks!
the recent PDF’s (from the last six months or so) have gotten really detailed grammar point write ups, so i recommend checking out some of those lesson notes!
Also, if you’re a newbie, i recommend Naomi-sensei’s Newbie series which is in progress now!

(mai nichi nihongo o benkyoushimasu!) Study Japanese everyday!
がんばってね。(gambatte) Be persistant!
I hope my hiragana, romanji and english came out correct, but anyways, these lessons are great and for me the next best thing to having worked in a Japanese owned and run restaurant for the last 4 years. The best way to practice is with a native speaker. Finding a Japanese friend can be as easy as making a trip to your local Japanese grocery store or joining your local chapter of the Japan America Society, if you live in the US. Or, as in my case, you can just work for a Japanese restaurant, but beware not all Japanese restaurants and sushi bars are run by Nihonjin, so ask around.
Jpod101 is the coolest website to start learning and to really use what you learn! The Japanese language spoken here is modern everyday Japanese taught with both formal and informal ways of saying things. Being just barely an intermediate level speaker, I love to refresh my memory and get new insight on the things I’ve already learned as well as learn new concepts and words.
Monday at 4:57 am
yeah i heard a couple of these words in anime, especailly one piece there was this pun on the word gochisosama, having to do with somebody who died i don’t remember but it was funny,
but i liked this i started japanese over a year ago but this time i’m going to go at my own pace and be constinent, i liked how they did the lesson can’t wait to listen to more xD

Hello! Just wanted to mention, I think there’s a typo in the main lesson PDF. Under the description of “desu”, it states:
“It may be used after nouns, adjectives and verbs in their plain *negative* form.”
On the grammar page for this lesson, it states:
“It may be used after nouns, i-adjectives and verbs in their plain form.”
It then shows that both present negative and past negative forms are “De(wa)”. I’ve hardly started with this program yet, so I may be wrong (please let me know if I am) but I think the “plain negative form” in the PDF is incorrect.
Friday at 12:09 pm
Also, so far I love the program! Thanks so much for making it!

Wow! Thankyou to all the staff at JapanesePod101… This stuff is *really* good!
I’m learning Japanese independently right now and I’m an absolute beginner, but I’ve tried a plethora of different learning methods before with limited success… From Rosetta to actual lessons at university to numerous expensive book purchases… None of it has worked for me.
However, for some reason I’ve found your site to be really, really helpful. I normally don’t retain the words or phrases I hear that well but using the audio in conjunction with the PDF files and supporting material is really making it easy for me to pick up on Japanese!
Well, I probably sound like a paid salesman at this point so I’ll wrap it up. Thanks guys! I’m on a 7 day trial but I’ll be upgrading to premium for sure.
My one piece of criticism about the site would be that it doesn’t seem to have any information about Hiragana or Katakana, or Kanji… At least not that I can see. Probably less useful than the vocal material for most people (eg. travellers) but I definitely want to learn it too. Have I just missed something? Currently, I’m using the ‘Yookoso!’ book to supplement this site for the written aspects of Japanese.
Thanks!
- Duality.

When I was going over the hiragana vocabulary I noticed that you and my Genki I textbook spell itadakimasu different. At first I though you were writing ‘itadaku’, then I realized that it didn’t have ‘ku’ at the end but ’su’. In fact, I believe your spelling may be incorrect as the syllables the way you have it spelled don’t make the word.
You have it spelled:
いただます
I Ta Da Ma Su
Genki and I spell it:
いただきます
I Ta Da Ki Ma Su
Did I miss something or is that a mistake?
Monday at 12:44 pm
Alexさん,
Can you tell me where you saw the いただます spelling? I looked for it but couldn’t find where it was spelled like that. The correct spelling is definitely the latter, いただきます
Monday at 1:07 pm
I believe it was in the hiragana list of the lesson notes (In the vocabulary) but I can’t go back and make sure that I didn’t just copy it wrong because my free trial has ran out of .pdf downloads.

koolkidklubさん,
You’ll be fine! Starting with these Introduction lessons is a good idea. You might also want to try some of the Newbie lessons as well. Are you studying katakana and hiragana? Those two scripts are really important to know for writing!
Take a deep breath!
If you need specific help, you can also ask at our forum:

You’ll find lots of people studying Japanese there who are willing to help you if you get stuck!

This is oo cool!

I been looking up all kinds of japanese everywhere, but here, it`s all in one place!!
I love it!
It`s really funny,.
“maa, maa”
“I`d give you more so you will like it!”
I`m very young, and they say learning a new language is easier for younger minds. >.> I really want to visit Japan. I`ve heard most of these phrases on Anime and TV shows. Though, i don`t know any one who`s japanese so i could talk and practice to them. ( i guess my dad would help since he`s lived there before.) ._. But this helps me a lot! I retain all i`ve heard.
I enjoy listening to the podcasts.
I`d like to get them on my ipod so i can listen to them everywhere i go, but i don`t get how that works ?
if anyone could help me, i`d be most happy.

I have to say this is the best way to learn Japanese from the picks I have. The people communicating in the lessons act casually and not the dull way other Japanese DVDs teach you. Im using these phrases as much as I can and Im glad to see Im progressing!

Hi all,
The audio lesson is good but Kanji Close-Up is so difficult for me. I have no prior knowledge of Japanese so this is the first Japanese lesson I’ve ever taken, and I don’t understand how should I write kanji. Should I use a pen for it? And how do I write these little arrows at the end of strokes? According to Kanji Basics sheet in Learning Center there is a correct writing order for every kanji. Is there a place where I can look up a correct writing order for kanji from the Close-Up sheet?
Thursday at 2:21 pm
Oleksandr-san,
Thank you for trying to use the Kanji Basics sheet in the Learning Center. We have another new feature to learn Kanji. You can access it from the URL below.
http://www.japanesepod101.com/learnkanji/
You’ll search kanji which you want to look up and you’ll see the animated kanji stroke order.
Please check it out!
